Mickey Mouse Pumpkin Carving

IMG 11621

This Mickey Mouse Pumpkin Carving was carved to provide illustrations for a pumpkin carving e-book. It’s one of our favorite carvings. This work of art is was done using the advanced shaded technique of carving, where the pumpkin’s skin is peeled off in some places, and cut all the way through in other areas. This allows the light to shine through with different intensities. The seeds were very tasty after roasting! (check the recipes section of this site.)

Do you have a copy of the stencil that I could use? My daughter loves Mickey!

just a note, you can use any picture of mickey mouse as simple or complex as you’d like. Stencil on the contour lines and use a dremel to carve out just the skin of any area that isn’t going to be black. be sure that any black area on your character that has an edge you want seen gets outlined just outside the edge. You have to pay attention to what objects are in front and behind to make it all look right.

They key technique that i made sure to do was to add more values of light. I peeled back less of the shorts because they are darker than the skin, shoes and gloves. I cut to different depths in the same section to create light and dark tones making the hands and feet look 3 dimensional and “poofy” Finally find key points and only take these ones all the way through. For Mickey I chose the buttons and the eyes.
